Mongol conquests quickly linked together much of Afroeurasia in new patterns of exchange. As world historians, we are drawn to understanding these patterns; the main challenge is that contemporary observers often didn’t write about them. We find only occasional mentions in primary sources. And when well-known primary sources mention these exchanges, the authors sometimes get things wrong!
