Total War is one of the main concepts that many teachers introduce when teaching the First World War. Every textbook addresses the topic. There are lots of excellent resources on total war, such as Amy Elizabeth Robinson’s “World War I: A Total War?” for the OER Project. One thing I’ve noticed about the included primary sources is that they usually come from Britain, France, and the United States. Occasionally, there will be sources from Germany or British and French colonies. I’ve never seen a textbook include the Ottoman Empire in its discussion of total war. Is the concept relevant?
